Stone Mountain Park, few miles east of the town center in DeKalb County, is one of the most popular locations to visit near Atlanta. Stone mountain is at its center, an uncovered granite mass of 863 feet high.
You can go up to the top or up the mountain by cable car, and a locomotive runs through the park, traveling around a five-mile track. There are long-lasting hanging sectional walks and bridges along the treetops, a small child petting farm, a 1940s DUKW Army Land/Lake Trip, which involves some local history, a preserved antebellum plantation, and a museum of Native American artifacts and displays.
The perfect time to visit is from March until May, when you can enjoy mild weather and outdoor festivities in the area. Atlanta summer is well-known for being hot and humid, and room rates are the highest. And autumn comes during the hurricane season in the Atlantic, so you can face weather difficulties if there's a storm.
